How To Make Chicken Stock

Learn how to make chicken stock – a tasty and healthy alternative to commercial stock cubes, which can be very salty (find out more about the dangers of adding salt to baby food).

This homemade stock can be used in soups or stews for your baby – or, if your baby refuses vegetables, try cooking them in the stock instead of plain water. The added flavour may entice your baby to happily accept vegetables that he previously refused.

Chicken Stock Recipe

leftover chicken carcass

2 onions

2 leeks

2 carrots

2 sticks of celery

2 tbsp chopped, fresh parsley

  1. Wash, peel and roughly chop the vegetables.
  2. Place the carcass into a large stock pot.
  3. Add the vegetables and parsley, then cover with plenty of water.
  4. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat until the liquid is simmering rapidly.
  5. Simmer, uncovered, for about 4 hours, skimming off any foam that rises to the surface.
  6. Remove the bones and strain the stock.
  7. If the stock is to be stored for future use, you may wish to simmer it for a few hours longer. This reduces it, making it more concentrated and easier to store.
